The lack of effect of methimazole therapy in lepromatous leprosy. Reassessment by examination of bacterial morphology.

چکیده
Following O'Byrne's report ( If)) of the efficacy of antithyroid drugs in leprosy, an examination of the mechanism of action of methimazole in lepromatous leprosy was undertaken. In a preliminary report of this study (n), a lack of correspondence was noted be tween the clinical appearance of the patients and the histopathologic appearance of serial skin biopsies obtained during methimazole therapy. Recent reports that the morphologic appearance of Mycobacterium Zeprae bears a close relationship to the ability of these organisms to multiply in the mouse foot pad ( II ), and that changes in the morphology of the bacilli occur with regularity during original trea tment with dapsone (I ~) , suggested that a re trospective assessment of m ethimazole therapy in our patients with lepromatous leprosy might now be possible. The suggestions of other workers (:I, 3, G) that methimazole therapy of lepromatous leprosy is ineffective have been confirmed.

De-Novo Presentation of Histoid Leprosy on an Unusual Site
Histoid Leprosy (HL) is a rare variant of Lepromatous Leprosy, occurring in long-standing cases, mostly in a background of acquired drug resistance. Patients usually present with sudden onset multiple nodules and plaques, most often involving the skin and subcutaneous tissue of trunk and lower limbs. Here we report an unusual case of de novo (without any history of prior anti-leprotic therapy) ...

Fortunately, the outlook for patients has dramatically improved over the last three decades with the introduction of multi-drug treatment and management strategies that have somewhat dim...
متن کاملLangerhans Cells in Skin Lesions of Leprosy
Background: Langerhans cells are important in the pathogenesis of leprosy. A recent study reported that these cells were almost absent in the epidermis overlying lepromatous lesions. Objective: To investigate a possible relationship between the number of Langerhans cells and the histopathologic spectrum of lesions in patients with leprosy. Methods: An immunohistochemical staining for S100 prot...
متن کاملViability of Mycobacterium leprae in skin and peripheral nerves and persistence of nerve destruction in multibacillary patients after 2 years of multidrug therapy.
The pathological changes, bacterial load, and viability of Mycobacterium leprae in the skin and nerves of nine lepromatous leprosy patients who had undergone 2 years of multidrug therapy (MDT) were studied. M. leprae and varying amounts of their remnants were present in the nerves and skin of all but one patient. M. leprae isolated from skin biopsies of six patients and nerve biopsies of nine p...
